info@nuovaicona.org | | La ricerca di Ali Assaf, artista multimediale, negli ultimi anni si è concentrata sull’indagare le stesse ragioni del suo essere Iracheno in Italia. Nel 1974 Ali si trasferiva a Roma per frequentare l’Accademia di Belle Arti, trovandosi a confrontare – dietro l’apparente amichevolezza dell’Italia - la situazione dell’immigrazione “extracomunitaria” quando il fenomeno non era ancora esploso nel nostro paese, né era – per così dire – di moda. Questo filo sotterraneo, questo “problema” che non osava dire il proprio nome, né era forse evidente nel suo primo lavoro è venuto al proscenio negli ultimi anni, attraverso lavori come la recente performance “diaspora”(2004) e il lavoro fotografico “quell’oscuro oggetto del desiderio”(2003), in cui Assaf indaga i perché dell’essere in Italia per uomini e donne immigrati che lui intervista – ricevendone risposte le più varie, dalla disimpegnata e sorridente “perchè qui le donne sono più facili” sino al dolente “lasciami in pace” di chi trova troppo penoso anche il riflettere sulla domanda di uno sconosciuto. A Nuova Icona Assaf espone la serie “Saluti da Baghdad”, lavori fotografici manipolati al computer. Diverse persone sono state richieste di mandare dalla capitale irachena un messaggio a parenti ed amici lontani. Come negli studi fotografici dell’800, in cui il personaggio ritratto “posava” sullo sfondo di una celebre veduta, così i personaggi di Assaf ci sorridono davanti a campi petroliferi in fiamme, o apparentemente indifferenti al crollo della statua di Saddam Hussein che sta precipitando alle loro spalle. Benché l’immagine presenti personaggi sorridenti che guardano diritto avanti a sè, i messaggi verbali da loro inviati sono pieni di pessimismo e di ansia per il futuro, più in tono con il fondale. Temi di guerra e speranze di pace – nell’artista che riflette sul proprio paese d’origine rivolgendovi lo sguardo dal paese d’adozione – che come tutto l’Occidente ha imparato ad esportare le proprie tensioni in altre, distanti, realtà. Ali Assaf (Bassora, Iraq, 1950) vive e lavora a Roma. Fra i più innovativi e sperimentali artisti iracheni già dalla fine degli anni ’70, le sue opere – fotografia, installazione, performance – sono state presentate in diversi musei e gallerie in Europa e nei Paesi Arabi.
La mostra di Ali Assaf è prodotta con il sostegno del Ministero della Cultura dell’Iraq.
“by//pass” e’ il titolo di una rassegna di quattro mostre che si occupano, in modi e misura diversa, delle “terre di tensione” nel mondo, con particolare attenzione alle nuove e vecchie realta’ mediorientali ulteriormente agitate dalla corrente crisi irachena, dell’identita’ delle popolazioni in contraddizione tra il desiderio di un ritorno a radici culturali e religiose ed il bisogno di una nuova – e autonoma – definizione. Emily Jacir ha inaugurato il ciclo; a seguire le personali di Melih Gorgun, Alì Assaf e Carel Moisewitsch..

The research carried out by the multimedia artist, Ali Assaf, in recent years, has been concentrated on the investigation into the very meaning behind his being an Iraqi in Italy. In 1974 Ali moved to Rome to attend the Academy of Fine Arts, finding himself face to face - behind the apparent friendliness of Rome - with the situation of the non-EEC immigration at a time when the phenomenon had yet to explode in our country, and which was still not - so to speak - fashionable. This underground thread, this "problem" which he dared not call by its real name, and which was not perhaps evident in his early work but came to the fore in recent years, through works such as the recent performance "diaspora" (2004) and the photographic work "quell'oscuro oggetto del desiderio" (2003) in which Assaf investigates into the reasons for being in Italy of the immigrant men and women he interviews - receiving extremely varied answers, from the disengaging and smiling "because here the women are easier-going" through to the pained "leave me in peace" on the part of those who find it too painful even to reflect on the query of a stranger.
At Nuova Icona Assaf exhibits the series "Greetings from Baghdad", photographic works manipulated on the computer. Diverse people have been asked to send a message from the Iraqi capital to distant relatives and friends. Just as in the photographic studies of the 1800s in which the portrayed personage "posed" against a well-known background scene, the characters of Assaf smile back at us in front of flaming oil fields, or apparently indifferent to the collapse of the statue of Saddam Hussein which is falling behind their shoulders. Even though the images present smiling characters looking straight ahead, the verbal messages sent by them are steeped in pessimism and anxiety at their future, more in keeping with the image background.
Themes of war and hope for peace - in the artist who reflects on his motherland, turning his gaze from his land of adoption - which like all the West has learnt to export her own tension in other, distant realities.
Ali Assaf (Bassora, Iraq, 1950) lives and works in Rome. One of the more innovative and experimental Iraqi artists already back in the 70s, his works - photography, installations, performances - have been presented in diverse museums and galleries in Europe and in Arabian countries.
The show by Ali Assaf is produced with the help of the Ministery of Culture of Iraq.
"by//pass" is the title of a collection of four exhibitions which deal with, in diverse manner and measure, the "lands of tension" in the world, paying particular attention to the new and old Middle East realities, further agitated by the current Iraq crisis, by the "identity" of the peoples in contradiction between the desire for a return to their cultural and religious roots, and for a new and autonomous definition. Emily Jacir has inaugurated the cycle; in the coming months will follow one-person shows by Melih Gorgun, Alì Assaf and Carel Moisewitsch.
