Hans Winkler è invitato a mostrare la sua installazione “Ezra Pound’s Cage” presso Nuova Icona nel giugno 2007.

    Come artista, Winkler lavora da molti anni soprattutto con interventi pubblici e progetti site specific in tutto il mondo.

    Winkler da vita a progetti artistici che sono strettamente legati alla città e allo spazio. La sua arte tratta questioni sociali e interviene nella vita quotidiana: il progetto, molto poetico ed esteticamente forte “un incidente in gondola”, realizzato con Nuova Icona, rivela chiaramente la sua metodologia di lavoro. Un altro esempio: sul passo del Brennero, nel 1997, ha trasformato (con il suo p.t.t. red partner) una baita di montagna, usata dai pastori, in una libreria-eremo della montagna, piena di libri suggeriti solo da scrittori e filosofi internazionali.

    Tornando ad “Ezra Pound’s cage”, il lavoro di Winkler consiste nel ricostruire la gabbia che fu straordinariamente fabbricata dall’Esercito Americano, nel 1945, per imprigionare Ezra Pound. Per questo progetto Hans Winkler ha svolto ricerche negli USA e si serve di materiali e disegni provenienti dal manuale dell’Esercito Americano. Questa specie di piccole gabbie esposte all’esterno esistono ancora oggi a Guantanamo, Cuba.

    L’installazione ci parla della vita di Ezra Pound, vissuto e morto a Venezia, e si riferisce, parallelamente, alla storia del movimento d’avanguardia del 20th secolo, sul quale Ezra Pound ebbe un’enorme influenza.

    Pound fu spesso chiamato “il poeta dei poeti”, ed è generalmente considerato come il teorizzatore e il promotore di un’estetica moderna in poesia. Nei primi decenni del ventesimo secolo, Pound diede il via ad un fecondo scambio di lavori e idee tra scrittori inglesi e americani, e divenne famoso per la generosità con cui favorì il lavoro di grandi scrittori contemporanei come W. B. Yeats, Robert Frost, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway e specialmente T.S. Eliot. Fu grazie a Pound che le poesie di Eliot vennero pubblicate.

    Nel 1920, trasferitosi a Parigi, frequentava un circolo di artisti, musicisti e scrittori che avrebbero rivoluzionato l’intero mondo dell’arte moderna. Fu amico di figure notevoli, come Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, Fernand Leger, e altri del movimento Dada e del Surrealismo.

    Pound pubblicò oltre 70 libri e tradusse drammi teatrali giapponesi e poesie cinesi. I Canti, una serie di poesie che scrisse a partire dal 1920 e lungo tutta la sua vita (anche durante la detenzione nella gabbia), sono considerati capolavori della letteratura mondiale, e vinsero il Bollingen Prize nel 1948. Nelle sue poesie egli riversa in modo crescente le sue preoccupazioni riguardo la politica e l’economia.

    Visse praticamente tutta la sua vita in Italia (dal 1924). Si immischiò nella politica fascista, e non ritornò negli stati Uniti fino al 1945. All’età di 60 anni, fu arrestato con l’accusa di tradimento per aver trasmesso la propaganda fascista, tramite radio, agli Stati Uniti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e fu messo come un animale in una gabbia all’aperto, esposta a tutte le intemperie, per qualche mese. In un processo fu schedato come paranoico dagli psichiatri esaminanti. Pound passò 12 anni a Washington, D.C., in un ospedale per i malati di mente. Nel 1958 ritornò in Italia e si stabilì a Venezia, dove morì nel 1972. E’ sepolto nel Cimitero di San Michele.

Hans Winkler is invited to show his installation "Ezra Pound´s Cage" at Nuova Icona in June 2007.

    He is working as an artist mostly on public intervention and side spefic projects all over the world for many years.

    Hans Winkler is developing art pieces which are connected to the city and space. His art is dealing with issues of the society and intervene in daily life, like the aestetic poem of the project "un incedente in gondola" at Nuova Icona. On the Brennerpass he changed 1997 (with his p.t.t.red partner) a mountaincabin, used by shepards into a mountain/hermitage-library, filled with books suggested only by international writers and philosophers.

    For the "Ezra Pound´s cage" installation he is reconstructing the cage, which was especially built by the American Army 1945, to detain Ezra Pound. For the project Hans Winkler did research in the USA and is using material and drawings from the handbook of the American Army. This kind of small and open outdoor cages are still in Guantanamo, Cuba.

    The installation is telling the story of Ezra Pound´s life, who lived and died in Venice, and it shows also a part of the history of the avantgarde movement of the 20th century. Where Ezra Pound had an enourmous influence.

    He was often called "poet´s poet", and generally considered as the poet and most responsible for defining and promoting a modernist aesthetic in poetry. In the early teens of the twentieth century, he opened a seminal exchange of work and ideas between British and American writers, and was famous for the generosity with which he advanced the work of such major contemporaries as W. B. Yeats, Robert Frost, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and especially T.S. Eliot. Pound helped to get Eliot's poems into print.

    In Paris 1920 he moved among a circle of artists, musicians and writers who were revolutionising the whole world of modern art. He was friends with notable figures such as Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, Fernand Leger, and others of the Dada and Surrealist movements.

    Pound published over 70 books and translated Japanes plays and Chinese poetry. The Cantos, a series of poems which he wrote from 1920 throughout his life (also during his time in the cage), are considered as masterpiece of world literature, which won the Bollingen Prize 1948. In his poems he increasingly reflected his preoccupations with politics and economics.

    He lived almost his whole life in Italy (since 1924). He became involved in Fascist politics, and did not return to the United States until 1945. At the age of 60, he was arrested and on charges of treason for broadcasting Fascist propaganda by radio to the United States during the Second World War and kept like an animal in an outdoor cage, exposed to all weathers for some months. In a trial he was labelled as paranoid by the examining psychiatrists. Pound spent 12 years in Washington, D.C., in a hospital for the criminally insane. In 1958, he returned to Italy and settled in Venice, where he died 1972. He is interred in San Michele Cemetery.
