info@nuovaicona.org | | T.Melih Görgün è nato a Sinop (Turchia) nel 1962. Vive e lavora a Istanbul. Questo progetto nasce da vari incontri con l’artista nello scorso inverno a Istanbul. Il lavoro di Melih Görgün’s per Venezia concerne sia la religione come componente dialettica dei processi di globalizzazione, come pure i temi di religiosità facenti parte della memoria e identità di ognuno – con la storia individuale e generale. Pur toccando temi molto personali, Görgün evita l’annedotico ponendo il suo discorso ad un livello universale. La mostra è un confronto sensibile del sé e dell’altro, nel quadro delle religioni d’oggi. Attraverso l’uso di video e lavori audio l’artista compara confessioni Cristiane, Giudaismo ed Islam e le sue proprie convinzioni riguardo a domande quali: “Come confrontiamo la morte? Gli atei investono su condizioni spirituali dopo la morte? Se non è così, ciò forse significa che diciamo a noi stessi bugie per sfuggire alla nostra incapacità a confrontare la morte? Le religioni dànno una forte enfasi alla morte per aumentare il proprio potere. Ma cosa è la morte? Le differenze fra le varie religioni costituiscono qualche differenza nello status e condizioni della morte? Quale religione ha dettato le forme più magnifiche di morte?”
L’artista sarà presente all’inaugurazione che vedrà inoltre la performance del famoso danzatore e coreografo dervish Ziya Azazi (Vienna).
La mostra è co-curata da Beral Madra, Camilla Seibezzi, Vittorio Urbani. Prodotta da Nuova Icona, Venezia.

"by//pass" e' il titolo di una rassegna di quattro mostre che si occupano, in modi e misura diversa, delle "terre di tensione" nel mondo, con particolare attenzione alle nuove e vecchie realta' mediorientali ulteriormente agitate dalla corrente crisi irachena, e dall''identita' delle popolazioni, in contraddizione tra il desiderio di un ritorno a radici culturali e religiose ed il bisogno di una nuova - e autonoma - definizione. "Where We Come From" di Emily Jacir inaugura il ciclo; seguiranno nei prossimi mesi le personali di Melih Gorgun, Alì Hassaf e Carel Moisewitsch.

T.Melih Görgün was born in Sinop (Turkey) in 1962. He lives and works in Istanbul. This project was born out of meetings with the artist in Istanbul last winter. Melih Görgün’s work for Venice deals with religion as a dialectical component of the globalisation process as well as with the religious issues and sensibility that have to do with everybody’s memory and identity; with general and personal history. Although he touches very personal issues, Görgün avoids the anecdotal by placing his discourse on a universal level. The show is a perceptive confrontation of the self and the other, within the frame of contemporary religions. The exhibition consists of video and sound works, presenting a confrontation among Cristianity, Islam and Judaism as well as the artist’s manifesto dealing with questions such as:
“How do we face death? Are materialists investing in the spiritual condition after death? If not, does it mean that we are telling lies to ourselves in order to escape our inability to challenge death? Religions give a strong emphasis to death to empower themselves. What is death? Does the difference among religions make a difference in the status and conditions of death? Which religion has dictated the most magnificent death?”
The artist will be present at the opening and will also introduce a co-produced dance performance by the famous Mevlevi (Dervish) choreographer Ziya Azazi (Vienna).

"by//pass" is the title of a collection of four exhibitions which deal with, in diverse manner and measure, the "lands of tension" in the world, paying particular attention to the new and old Middle East realities, further agitated by the current Iraqi crisis, by the "identity" of the peoples in contradiction between the desire for a return to their cultural and religious roots, and for a new and autonomous definition. Emily Jacir inaugurates the cycle; this will be followed by one-person shows by Melih Gorgun, Alì Hassaf and Carel Moisewitsch.
This activity is a collaboration between Nuova Icona and the Centro Pace of the Comune of Venice.
