Vive e lavora a Vancouver in Canada, dove si è stabilita negli anni '80 per insegnare al Emily College of Art and Design. Lasciato in seguito il college, si dedica attualmente al lavoro di riabilitazione per persone affette da disagio mentale e tossicodipendenza nel centro della città, l'area urbana più povera e degradata del Canada. Artista che ha esposto ampiamente nel suo Paese e internazionalmente, Moiseiwitsch aggiunge alla sua pratica artistica l'esperienza politica ed umana di attivista in sostegno della pace: dopo lunghi viaggi nel nord Africa e nel Medio Oriente, la Moiseiwitsch è stata presente nel 2003 nei territori della Palestina sotto occupazione israeliana come attivista per i diritti umani dell'ISM (International Rights Movement). Di questa sua esperienza è frutto il corpo di lavori in mostra a Nuova Icona, in première per l'Europa. Una pittura forte e saporosa, che spazia dalla trascrizione apparentemente distaccata e fredda delle immagini scioccanti e celebri del fotogiornalismo, ad una sottile trascrizione, poetica e apparentemente naive della tragedia quotidiana della intifada. Scene di strada, come la rappresentazione del "dopo" di un attentato terroristico: ambulanze accorrono, i portantini trasportano cadaveri e c'è sangue dappertutto. Ma nonostante tutto questa pittura è felice, piena della gioia istintiva della rappresentazione e del colore. E' questa felicità incongrua che crea tensione morale e rende problematica, e insieme poetica e forte l'immagine." (v.u.)
"La mia arte è stata sempre più vicina alla strada (prendendo la forma di posters, comics, zines, t-shirts, ecc.) che al formale sistema di galleria. Prende spesso forme temporanee, molto grandi oppure pensate per la riproduzione di massa (è assai di rado arte incorniciata!). Il mio lavoro ha sempre un sottotesto politico e spesso si occupa di ingiustizia, abuso di potere e dei diritti umani dei diseredati. Uso il mio talento di disegnatrice per aggiungere una dimensione diversa alle informazioni, spesso distorte e disoneste che appaiono sui media internazionali." (C. Moiseiwitsch).
La mostra di Carel Moiseiwitsch è prodotta con il sostegno e la collaborazione della galleria "grunt", Vancouver; Comune di Venezia, Centro Pace, Venezia; Canada Council for the Arts, Visual Arts Section, Ottawa; e Ambasciata del Canada, Roma.
"by//pass" e' il titolo di una rassegna di quattro mostre che si occupano, in modi e misura diversa, delle "terre di tensione" nel mondo, con particolare attenzione alle nuove e vecchie realta' mediorientali ulteriormente agitate dalla corrente crisi irachena, e dell'identita' delle diverse popolazioni, in contraddizione tra il desiderio rassicurante di un ritorno a radici culturali e religiose "proprie" ed il bisogno di una nuova e autonoma definizione. Carel Moisewitsch conclude e completa il ciclo, formato dalle personali di Emily Jacir (Palestina/USA), Melih Gorgun (Turchia),e Alì Assaf (Iraq/Italia) lungo l'anno 2004.

Carel Moiseiwitsch, was born in London where she studied painting at St.Martin's Central. She now lives and works in Vancouver in Canada, where she settled in the 80s to teach at the Emily College of Art and Design. No longer at the College, at present she dedicates herself to the rehabilitation of people with mental and drug addiction difficulties in the city centre, the poorest and most degenerated urban area in Canada. An artist who has widely exhibited internationally and in her own country, Moiseiwitsch adds to her artistic practice the political and human experience as an activist in support of peace; following long journeys in North Africa and the Middle East, Moiseiwitsch was present in 2003 in the Palestinian territories under Israeli occupation as an activist for human rights of the ISM (International Rights Movement). The main body of the works on show at Nuova Icona are the fruits of this experience, a European Première. Strong and piquant painting which wanders between the apparently cold and detached transcription of the shocking and famous press images, and the subtle, poetic, apparently naive transcription of the everyday tragedy of the Intifada. Street scenes, that depict the "aftermath" of a terroristic attack: ambulances racing to the scene, the porters transport corpses and there is blood everywhere. But in spite of all this, the painting is happy, full of the instinctive joy of representation and the colour. It is this incongruous happiness which creates moral tension and renders the images problematic, and at the same time poetic and strong. (v.u.)
"My art has always been closer to the street (posters, comix, zines, t-shirts, etc.) than the formal gallery system. It is often temporary, very large or made for reproduction (and it is rarely framed). The work always has a political subtext and often deals with injustice, dispossession and abuse of power. I use my drawing skills to add another dimension to the often dishonest or superficial reporting of the middle east that appears in the mainstream media."(C. Moiseiwitsch).

"by//pass" is the title of a collection of four exhibitions which deal with the "lands of tension" in the world, paying particular attention to the new and old Middle East realities, further agitated by the current Iraq crisis, and by the search for "identity" of the peoples, in contradiction between the desire for a return to cultural and religious roots, and for a new and autonomous definition. Carel Moisewitsch's show is the last of the series, which has been made of the solo shows by Emily Jacir (Palestine/USA), Melih Gorgun (Turkey), Alì Assaf (Iraq/Italy).
