WHAT IS 'MUSEOMETROPOLITANO?'
The city which hosts the Biennale - the oldest art event worldwide - still
doesn't have its own museum of contemporary art.
Perhaps opening a museum space is
simple - in the grander scheme of things; the hard work remains in properly
maintaining and operating the museum.
A city-financed museum with international
aspirations will undoubtedly encounter general attention, but also trouble from
the beginning, requiring a continuous effort for funding and general operating
support for the structure itself. On the other hand, the energies left for planning
art events and instituting cultural policies would be weak, whereas these are, of course, the
intrinsic aspects of a dynamic structure. Consequently, from its inception, the
museum would not remain at ease in a rapidly changing world.
The 'museometropolitano', is a
project aiming to create a new public, non-commercial institution dedicated to
contemporary visual arts. The focus of the activity is on the artists and their activity.
Development of the project.
Active, international artists are commissioned to produce
new works or installations for buildings or open-air sites both in the city of Venice, and in other places. All correspondence with the artist, original drawings and exhibit
components are saved and historically documented, considered as archival documents
and not just "beautiful things".
Thus the 'museometropolitano' is a museum that works in creating its own history and
exists not just as storage for something produced elsewhere and graciously donated by the
bored rich. In the structure of the project nothing is decided permanently,
and the project can continuously be redefined and readdressed with newer, updated goals.
The main characteristic of this project is the process and the continuity that underlines
each single event. Careful attention is given to continuously monitoring the quality of the
completed work and assessing the best opportunities for future steps.
'museometropolitano' was instituted in the year 1997 by Nuova Icona, with the realization
of a new large-scale installation by American artist Robert Morris, "Tar Babies of the
New World Order."
