Nuova Icona e Artprojx presentano Broken Voices Venice, il primo di quattro nuovi sound pieces dell’artista inglese Terry Smith, in coincidenza con la 52 Biennale di Venezia, 2007. La prima piece sonora viene performata live da Linda Hirst, vocalista riconosciuta a livello internazionale, presso la Chiesa Anglicana di Venezia.

    Broken Voices – commissionato dal De La Warr Pavillion – è un nuovo eccitante intervento all’interno di uno spartito musicale e del processo performativo in quanto tale; smaschera come effimera la nozione di suono e lo fa decostruendo un brano di musica esistente e fruibile da tutti, Duo Seraphim, per tre Voci, di Monteverdi. Il lavoro dialoga e si fa contagiare dal luogo in cui prende vita, Venezia, una città intersecata da canali, da una miriade di calli e callette; essa diventa vera e propria musa ispiratrice per Smith, che la descrive come un luogo scuro pieno di luce. La città inoltre si presta in modo spontaneo e naturale alla costruzione e alle riprese video del nuovo lavoro di Smith, composto di più proiezioni sonore e visive, che sarà presentato al De La Warr Pavillion come parte integrante della composita mostra Triple Echo, nel settembre del 2007.

    Come tutti i progetti di Smith Broken Voices parte e prosegue da e verso molteplici direzioni, in un processo che si può definire di ‘mappatura’. Il lavoro si sviluppa dando luogo a segni, punti fermi, e cancellandoli in egual misura, producendo errori, imboccando strade sbagliate, e perdendosi quasi completamente. Smith descrive Venezia come ‘un posto che conosco bene. E’ un posto dove perdersi, un posto che ti svuota dai pensieri e spezza la tua immaginazione. Come in nessun’altra città, serve tempo per riunire tutti i pezzi, e ogni volta che guardo la mappa, finisco per perdermi.’

    Una versione registrata sarà presentata simultaneamente da The Eagle Gallery e the Pond Gallery, Snape, in coincidenza con il famoso Aldeburgh Music Festival, Suffolk. Il secondo movimento sarà presentato da Artprojx in Greenland Street, Liverpool, in giugno, e il terzo movimento sempre da Artprojx al Prince Chatles Cinema, Londra; il quarto movimento sarà performato al De La Warr Pavillion, Bexhill, nel settembre 2007.

    Terry Smith vive e lavora a Londra. Negli scorsi dodici anni ha dato vita a una serie di ‘building interventions’ in edifici domestici e industriali, e in gallerie e musei di tutto il mondo, dal British Museum al MACBA di Barcellona, e più recentemente ha iniziato ad esplorare gli universi del video e del suono. L’idea di smontare, decostruire, è sempre stata una prerogativa per Smith; si tratta di un metodo e un processo che gli permette di sfidare continuamente la sua capacità di comprendere cosa un medium può fare e come ci si possa avvicinare al significato più profondo di un lavoro.

Nuova Icona and Artprojx presents Broken Voices Venice, the first of four new sound pieces by the British artist Terry Smith to coincide with the 52nd Venice Biennale, 2007. The first movement will be performed live by the internationally renowned vocalist Linda Hirst at la chiesa Anglicana di Venezia.

    Broken Voices - commissioned by the De La Warr Pavilion - is a new and exciting intervention into a musical score and the process of performance, which explores the ephemeral notion of sound by deconstructing an existing piece of music, Duo Seraphim, for 3 Voci, by Monteverdi. The work centres on Venice, a place intersected by canals, a myriad of alleys and streets; this becomes the focus of Smith’s inspiration, which he describes as a dark place full of light. The city also lends itself to the construction and filming of Smith’s new multi-screened sound and video work to be premiered at the De La Warr Pavilion as part of the group exhibition Triple Echo, September 2007.

    Like all of Smiths projects Broken Voices begins with no set direction, where he employs a process of mapping as he goes along. The work develops by making marks and erasing with equal measure, making mistakes, taking wrong turns, and for a while getting completely lost. Smith describes Venice as, ‘a place I know well. It’s a place to get lost in, a place that breaks up your thoughts and your imagination. Like any city, it takes time to join up all the bits and whenever I look at a map, I get lost.’

    A recorded version will be presented simultaneously by The Eagle Gallery at the Pond Gallery in Snape to coincide with the famous Aldeburgh Music Festival, Suffolk. The second movement presented by Artprojx at Greenland Street, Liverpool in July and the third movement will presented by Artprojx at the Prince Charles Cinema, London; the fourth movement will be performed at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, September 2007.

    Terry Smith lives and works in London. Over the last twelve years he has created a series of building interventions in domestic and industrial buildings, and in Galleries and Museums worldwide from the British Museum to MACBA in Barcelona, and has more recently begun to explore video and sound. Taking things apart has always been a preoccupation for Smith and is a method and process that allows him to continually challenge his understanding of what a medium can do and how the meaning of a work can be understood.
