Richard Deacon, Merlin James e Heather & Ivan Morison hanno tutti espressamente realizzato nuove opere per la 52a Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte, attingendo ad approcci diversi alla scultura, alla pittura, ai suoni e alle immagini filmate.

    Nella varietà della sua pratica artistica, Richard Deacon ha continuamente messo in discussione, ampliandolo, il concetto di scultura: ciò che è, ciò che potrebbe essere. La sua opera comunica la qualità giocosa di una libertà estetica che deriva dall'aver colto la possibilità di fare arte con qualsiasi cosa, e che l’arte trae identità e significato dal contesto e dal suo pubblico.

    Durante una visita allo straordinario Capannone 1, Richard è rimasto colpito dai chiodi che punteggiano con regolarità la superficie delle pareti. Utilizzando ceramica, legno e acciaio, Richard ha creato alcune sculture che pendono da chiodi di bronzo, in modo da produrre un efficace ribaltamento dello spazio (la parete è usata come pavimento). In questo allestimento, Richard prosegue la sua indagine sui modi di “ancorare” agli oggetti rappresentazioni e significati.

    Le superfici dipinte delle tele di Merlin James sono il frutto di un impegno che dura da tempo; sono tele ricche e magnetiche, che attirano l'occhio verso la superficie e poi lo respingono. Sono giocose e gestuali, spesso tagliate o a collage, ispessite con terra o peli, e possono comprendere paesaggi, interni, nudi, abitazioni o varchi.

    Nella propria opera, Merlin articola una vasta gamma di esperienze umane (umori, memoria, sessualità), trattando la propria pratica come una specie di “critica d’arte non verbale”, nella quale l’indagine pittorica evoca un collage di diversi stili e punti di riferimento storici. Il suo intento non è quello di sovvertire la tradizione - i suoi dipinti nascono, piuttosto, da un’analisi meticolosa, che mantiene intatta la propria freschezza resistendo, con nostro sollievo, al richiamo della nostalgia.

    Nel 2005 Heather & Ivan Morison hanno acquistato un bosco nel Galles del Nord e ora stanno trasformando quell’area di vecchie conifere in un arboreto, cioè in una collezione di alberi provenienti da tutto il mondo. Man mano che i vecchi alberi saranno tagliati per lasciare spazio alle specie nuove, il legno sarà utilizzato per realizzare nuovi progetti (tra cui gran parte delle opere esposte a Venezia).

    All’origine del lavoro presentato a Venezia c'è la recente ricerca compiuta in America, sulle tracce dei gruppi nomadi che si spostavano attraverso gli Stati Uniti in case mobili costruite con tronchi d'albero, e dei ‘Rockhounds’ [cercatori di pietre] che si recano a Quartzsite, in Arizona, per vendere cristalli e pietre preziose.

    Il legno utilizzato per la realizzazione di “Pleasure Island” è ricavato da alberi abbattuti nel bosco di proprietà degli artisti all’inizio del 2007. Dalla scultura si sviluppa una forma cristallina: un parassita, un cancro vegetale o un’escrescenza al tempo stesso bella e repellente. In questa struttura si colgono echi anche delle forme geodesiche progettate da Buckminster Fuller negli anni Quaranta e comuni ai rifugi realizzati negli anni Settanta. Quest’opera ha una scultura “gemella” nei boschi del Galles del Nord, che sarà visitabile per tutta la durata della Biennale: la struttura che vediamo a Venezia è una sorta di spora, trasportata dagli artisti dal Galles all’Italia.

Richard Deacon è nato a Bangor, nel Galles del Nord. Vive e lavora a Londra. Dal 1969 al 1978 ha studiato presso St Martins, Royal College e Chelsea Schools of Art di Londra. The Arts Council of Wales-hosted exhibition, And so it goes, is at the same superb site as in previous years – The Ex-Birreria (Old Brewery) on Giudecca. The site comprises several spaces and, this year, will see part of the exhibition in the spectacular Capannone 1, once the brewery’s expansive storage space.

    Richard Deacon, Merlin James and Heather & Ivan Morison have all made new work for the 52nd International Art Exhibition, which incorporates a diverse approach to sculpture, painting, sound and film.

    Richard Deacon’s diverse practice has consistently challenged and extended notions of what sculpture is, and what it might be. His work communicates the playfulness of an aesthetic freedom that stems from an understanding that art can be made out of anything, deriving its identity and meaning through its context and audiences.

     Visiting Capannone 1, Richard became intrigued by the nails that uniformly stud the walls’ surface. Using ceramic, wood and steel, he has created a number of sculptures that are hung from cast bronze nails, effectively reversing the space to use the wall as floor, continuing his material investigations into how we ‘peg’ representation and meaning to objects.

    The painted surfaces of Merlin James’ canvases are testament to the endeavour of the artist over time. They are rich and rewarding and draw the eye back and forth across the canvas. They are playful and gestural and are often slashed, collaged, layered with hair or dirt and can include landscapes, interiors, nude figures, dwellings and doorways.

    Whilst articulating a range of human experience (mood, memory, sexuality), James sees his practice as a kind of ‘non-verbal art criticism’ in which his investigations in paint evoke a collage of different painting styles and points of historical reference. He has no interest in subverting tradition but his painting evolves out of a meticulous analysis that remains fresh and, refreshingly, manages to avoid nostalgia.

    In 2005 Heather & Ivan Morison acquired a wood in North Wales. They are developing the area of mature conifers into an arboretum, a collection of trees that will be gathered from around the world. As old trees are cleared to make way for new species, they are cut into timber that is used to realise new projects, including much of their work in Venice.

    The artists have used as a starting point their recent search of America for the original nomadic groups of people who travelled through the States in house-trucks made from felled timber and the ‘Rockhounds’ who travel to Quartzsite, Arizona to sell crystals and precious stones.

    ‘Pleasure Island’ is built from the timber of trees that were blown down in their wood early in 2007. The sculpture has a parasitic crystalline form; like a canker or growth that is both beautiful and yet repellent. It also echoes the geodesic forms designed by Buckminster Fuller in the 1940s and popularised as shelters in the 1970s. This work has a ‘sister’ sculpture in the woods in North Wales that can be visited for the duration of the biennale and develops the notion that the structure we see in Venice is somehow a spore that has been carried by the artists between Wales and Italy.

Richard Deacon was born in Bangor, North Wales in 1949, he now lives and works in London. Between 1969 and 1978 he studied at St Martins, the Royal College and Chelsea Schools of Art, London, England. He has exhibited and produced public commissions worldwide and recent exhibitions include ‘Personals’, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, England; The Size of It (touring); and Slippery When Wet, Madrid, Spain. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1987, and currently teaches at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He is represented in the UK by Lisson Gallery, London.

Merlin James was born in Cardiff in 1960 and now lives in Glasgow. Solo exhibitions include Sikkema Jenkins & Co, New York, USA; Andrew Mummery, London, England; Kerlin Gallery, Dublin, Ireland; Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland and Bay Art, Cardiff, Wales. He is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co, New York, USA.
